Foot and ankle injuries are often suffered by athletes due to the various physical activities they perform in sports such as running, side to side cutting, and even the direct trauma that occurs during a tackle. Athletes should be aware of the following injury risks while playing sports:
- Inversion ankle sprains can be associated with peroneal tendon injuries and fractions, and these sprains can also damage ankle ligaments
- Athletes can be sidelined by ankle fractures, metatarsal fractures, and Lisfranc fractures, and these injuries may even require surgery.
- The high impact created during tackling can potentially cause contusions and bone bruises.
- Heel pain (plantar fasciitis), Achilles tendonitis, sesamoiditis, stress fractures, posterior tibial tendonitis (PTTD) and calcaneal apophysitis in children and adolescents can be caused by overuse and excessive training.
